I’m about to share with you the best (and easiest) two-ingredient fry sauce in my humble opinion. The best because it uses something better than plain ketchup as the counterpart (not that there is anything wrong with ketchup). The easiest because there are two ingredients in equal parts. Chances are you have these ingredients in your refrigerator right now. Ready for it? Drum roll please! The best and easiest way to make fry sauce is equal parts mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. Because you are only using two ingredients, it’s important that they are quality ingredients. You can make it “fancier” by adding more ingredients, but the two basic ingredients is truly all you need. I got the idea to use barbecue sauce instead of ketchup (the norm) because I was trying to imitate the fry sauce from Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, which is my favorite burger joint in the USA.
What is fry sauce?
Fry sauce is a dipping sauce for your favorite french fry (think beyond just ketchup). Usually, it’s a base combination of mayonnaise and ketchup. The best two-ingredient fry sauce uses barbecue sauce instead of ketchup. Think flavor explosion!
Where did fry sauce originate?
Fry sauce has varied origins from many countries throughout the world. The earliest datable use I could find is called “golf sauce.” It was invented by Nobel laureate, Luis Federico Leloir, in the mid-1920s at a seaside golf resort as a new type of dip for prawns. In the 1940s a Utah barbecue joint used a “pink sauce.” Since the restaurant served barbecue, I’d like to think that pink sauce was a combination of barbecue sauce and mayonnaise. In the 1950’s another Utah-based burger joint used a mayo-ketchup combo for a french fry dipping sauce. Voila! Speaking of France, I wouldn’t be surprised if the French actually thought of fry sauce first to go with pommes frites, since they are often served with mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, and tomato sauce. Come on, someone had to mix those together!
Is fry sauce Paleo?
Fry sauce can be both Paleo, Whole30, and Keto friendly by using paleo compliant ingredients like avocado based mayonnaise and a Whole30 compliant barbecue sauce.
