Mom’s Juicy Ginger-Beer Ham

Mom’s Juicy Ginger-Beer Ham

I periodically get nostalgic for my Mom’s Juicy Ginger-Beer Ham. She served it to our family both at Christmas and Easter. As a child I remember grumbling to my mom about having ham and potato salad twice a year while only having turkey and stuffing once. “Why can’t we have turkey and stuffing twice,” I wondered, since Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday meal. Fast forward, that’s why I never really know what I’ll make for Christmas or Easter. I’ve made all sorts of meals like Rotisserie Prime Rib and Pan-Seared Oven Finished Rack of Lamb. That is until this year. I called my mom today and talked through how she makes her ham. Her secret is using Vernors Ginger Ale to bring a fully cooked ham to temperature. Easy for her since she is from Detroit. Not so easy for me since this soda is not available out west. Vernors is much stronger than your average ginger ale. Then it hit me. It’s more like ginger beer which is readily available since Moscow Mules are popular again. Today, I enjoyed a meal that I haven’t had since my childhood.

1Heat oven to 250 degrees. Put ham cut side down in dutch oven.

Pour a bottle of ginger beer into the pot, cover, and place into the oven.

  • Once again, simple, and SO yummy! And GINGER BEER!!! Woo hoo! Somebody’s Mom was a really fun Mom! This dish is so tasty and it’s great for people who, like me, don’t want to spend forever in the kitchen weighing things, and still getting it wrong. Way to go Chef!

    • Thank you! This is really a big compliment because I know you are not a huge fan of ham. It is a great way to feed a lot of people for a lot less money than a different cut. I should have made Moscow Mules with the rest of the ginger beer. Oh well, next time.
      Love,
      Michele
